Fresh New Fit: Table Tennis

By: LL
This is a little delayed, but over Thanksgiving weekend, a few of us went to SPiN - a ping pong bar in downtown Milwaukee. My husband happens to LOVE ping pong (we actually just got a Stiga table for our basement "game room"), so this was a perfect follow-up to an overindulgent meal at Karl Ratzsch, which is a quaint German restaurant in Milwaukee. (If you go, I would ask for Dennis as your server.)

Ping pong, or table tennis, might not be at the top of your list for fitness, but it should be (especially if you live near SPiN or another similar venue). Not only is table tennis fun, but it also is a great workout - who knew right? It is an Olympic sport though...

During my search to learn more about ping ponging, I came across a blog called Fitzness International that discusses surprising ways to burn 500 calories. Ping pong is #28. Here's what they say:

Ping pong or Table Tennis is a very old sport that began in ancient China. The game has grown in popularity over the years making a splash in rec rooms and basements worldwide.

Ping pong may seem a bit leisurely, but you can burn as many calories playing ping pong as you can walking at a brisk pace. The number of calories you burn playing depends on how much muscle you have, age, sex and fitness level. Regardless of all that, if you are playing an intense and competitive game, you can burn a ton of calories.
  • If you weigh between 105-120 lbs, you may burn between 8.4-9.5 calories per minute.
  • If you weigh between 170-200 lbs, you may burn between 13.2-15.5 calories per minute.
That is 570 and 930 calories burned in just one hour of ping pong!

Far different from a traditional gym workout, ping pong is a fun form of exercise that will definitely burn some fat while revving up your metabolism.

Here is a look at our ping pong night work out at SPin.
