Fitting Debates: Taking the Stairs

By: LL

"You have two choices for getting out of here - through the window or take the stairs."

Recall what movie that was from? If you lived through In Living Color, then you just might recognize this from another Wayne's brothers' classic, I'm Gonna Git You Sucka. (Future post about OGing to come!)

Seriously though, how hard is it to take the stairs? Putting legitimate injuries aside, I am always in awe by how many of my coworkers take the elevator up one or two floors. I hear their excuses of "I'm in heels" or "I hate being out of breath," but that means nothing to me. In this day in age, when obesity rates are skyrocketing and the expectations for minimum physical activity per day is reduced, the simple act of taking the stairs can make a whole lot of difference!

Around this time of year, when resolutions are being tossed around like dirty tissues, it is hard to understand the school of thought supporting elevator use. Just yesterday, I had a conversation with a coworker who has resolved to be more physically fit. As I headed for the stairs and she headed to the elevator, I chided her a bit. Why not start here? Add this fitness. She responded that taking the stairs up three flights to our department didn't make that much difference. She'd make up for it at the gym after work. But doesn't it make a difference? I know I feel that it does!
