Friday's Favorite Fit: The Sock Bun

Now that I have longer hair (yes, since we started this blog, Jess and I have both always had longer hair, but at one time, I had short hair...see proof below):

However, with long hair and a hot summer upon us, both Jess and I have started to lean on the sock bun for a cute, quick and easy hairstyle. I use the method shown below in the video (which is where I learned to do the sock bun) and have had good results:

Whether you opt to use a sock (try to find one close in color to your hair color) or a store-bought model, try your luck at this fun hairstyle. It is appropriate for a variety of occasions and, seriously, is very easy to master. Just use this video:

Friday's Favorite Fit: The Bubble Necklace

Today's installment of Friday's Favorite Fit is the Bubble Necklace!

The Right Fits are huge fans of the Bubble Necklace. We've incorporated this statement necklace into so many different outfits over the past year or two!

We both loved the necklace from first sight, and each purchased one in a different color with the intention of swapping out. LL got turquoise and Jess got red. Then, LL got red and Jess got yellow. And then LL bought Jess a turquoise one as a gift... You see where this is headed. There hasn't been any swapping. 

So with so many color options, we both find this necklace to be the right fit for multiple different looks.

Favorite Fit: Banana Republic Friends and Family Sale!

Friday's Favorite Fit: TOMS!

Toms. Don't you love them? I bet most of you have at least one pair, right? Personally, I believe I have five pairs. But I love them! They are so comfy. Seriously. And I just like the way they look! You can wear them with anything. You can even wear them with your wedding dress.

 Even though Toms are generally comfy, they don't have a ton of support. My tip? If I plan to wear them for a long day at a festival or whatnot, I put superfeet inside to give my feet a little more support.

The D-man has a few pairs too, of course...some of which are very colorful!

Friday's Favorite Fit: BIC Bands!

Happy Friday friends! Today's edition of "Friday's Favorite Fit" is an oldie but a goodie- BIC bands!

I wrote about my love of BIC Bands ("Because-I-Can") last May as well, in this post but I think it's time to bring it up again for any new readers. Favorite Fit: Unsuspecting Color Combinations

How do you feel about color? Do you shy away from it and douse yourself in neutrals (black on black on black)? Do you like to add one pop of color (khaki shirt dress with a purple scarf)? Or, are you more like Emma Pillsbury (Glee), pairing unique colors for a quirky look? If you follow this blog, you know that Jess and I lean more towards the Emma Pillsbury style. In fact, before Jayma Mays's character disappeared from Glee, I watched the show to get inspiration from her looks. And I know that I am not the only one. (Check out What Would Emma Pillsbury Wear? Cute blog!).

The reason I bring this up is because I have twice now been questioned at work about my color pairings. Today was a pair of dark teal cropped pants with a gold cardigan and turquoise necklace. The other day was a coral cardigan, mint trousers and a yellow necklace. A few weeks back, I wore a sky blue pencil skirt and a lilac blouse. Even though my color combinations might catch some people off guard, I think that combining unexpected colors keeps your closet interesting. Here are some of my favorite unsuspecting color combinations that I encourage you to mimic this spring.

Courtesy of a fellow running blogger, "Mile Posts- A Blog About All Things Related to the Sport of Running", this t-shirt is super soft and has a great fit- a bit feminine/tighter in the right places (i.e what's called semi-fitted/women's cut). It's Saucony brand. I bought a medium, and wish I would have bought a few more- more for gifts for friends, and more for myself!

Favorite Fit: My Favorite Dress

Do you have a favorite dress that you have had for many years.. a dress that has remained "in style" and wearable year after year? A dress that you keep coming back to for last minute events?

I have a dress like that. It's definitely a favorite fit of mine.
I bought it FIVE years ago from the J.Crew wear-to-work line.

 It's one of their "Super 120's" line of tailored dresses made of merino wool. The majority of the dresses in this line are gray or black- i.e. business professional of course. But they always carry one or two fun colors which suit my personal style a bit better, while maintaining a classic, conservative look that lasts year after year.

This magenta dress has seen a lot of plays, went to a lot of dinners, and probably attended a wedding or two. The classic tailored fit has allowed me to continue wearing this dress year after year. I have changed the way that I accessorize- (this time it was a turquoise J.Crew bubble necklace, courtesy of LL. Thanks for the necklace!)- but the look is basically the same.

This favorite fit came out again last week when the D-man and I went to see Aida (thanks to his company for the tickets). I am pretty sure this dress enjoyed the Elton John and Tim Rice musical as much as I did!

This dress has basically paid for itself with all the wear I have had with it! It has definitely been, and continues to be, one of my favorite fits!

Thanksgiving Fits: Holiday Packing

I must say that I personally enjoy Thanksgiving much more than Christmas. I think it is because you get to enjoy the company and good food, but without the pressure of finding the right gift and spending money that you don't have. In my family, Thanksgiving is also all about the right fits.

As I talked about the other day, my family hosts an annual 5k on Thursday morning to kick off the over-indulgent feast. But the holiday isn't only about physical fits ... it is also about fashion fits. Having four older sisters, Thanksgiving is a time of modeling cute new outfits and swapping fashion (which we refer to as Long-Term Borrows, or LTBs).

As I prepare for my annual pilgrimage back to Wisconsin, the first step in my planning is coming up with my outfits. For me, this means an outfit for travel/arrival, another for Thanksgiving day and a third for our evening out to celebrate my husband's birthday and catch up with a few friends.

Since I will be flying back to Wisconsin, my "arrival" outfit will convey stylish comfort, such as this bargain look - yellow cardigan from Old Navy, navy striped cotton turtleneck from Gap, red Bubble necklace from J.Crew, Always Skinny jeans from Gap, and wedge riding boots from Abound. This outfit works because it is comfortable with a few stylish pieces that tie the outfit together and make it looked polished. In addition, the winter coat can stay in the suitcase so you aren't lugging that around with your carry-on.

For the Thanksgiving celebration, I like to dress up. Here is a great look that includes an aubergine dress from Dorothy Perkins, Club Monaco polka dot tights, Steven Madden black suede pumps, a gold Seiko watch, and a gold-plated leaf necklace. This outfit works so well because it is comfortable and warm but not a sweater, which can become too warm with many people in one room with multiple ovens on. It also includes some of the great fall colors that I love so much.

Then, there is a look for a night out to catch up with friends. Here is a good look that includes a blazer and blouse from H&M, Diva jeans from Old Navy, a checker necklace from Forever21, and suede gray booties from BCBG Generation. Why this outfit works is that it doesn't require a winter coat (which is cumbersome when going out for drinks) and is fancy without being overly fancy. It is sweet and simple. 

Throwing a Fit for a Favorite Fit: Tall Boots

Fall is all about boots and booties. I was thrilled the other night to finally pull out my boots from storage to wear for the first time of the season. Tall boots are by far one of my favorite fall fits. Here is a peek at some of the amazing pairs that I have been watching.

One of the nice things about these boots is that they all have a little extra room, which when you are a runner, your calves need a little leeway. In case you have this problem - where tall boots do not seem to fit well over your calves - look for elastic or simply a wider shaft that has a buckle at the top. As I search for a new pair of boots to replace my old tired pair from the past two years, I am searching DSW, Off-Broadway, Nordstrom Rack, 6 pm, Endless and Piperlime. These are great options for reasonable prices on quality boots.
