Weekly Recap: I'm Sorry for What I Said When I Was Hungry..

Hey, are you keeping up with the 30 Day Pushup Challenge? Today was a rest day, but tomorrow we have another 15 pushups!

Other than the pushup challenge, let me fill you in on the past week at the Right Fits!

What’s happening in fashion?
When I was in NOLA a few weeks ago for a bachelorette party, my sister filled in for me on the blog. She wrote a great piece about some killer deals at Kate Spade recently. I took her advice, and ordered a pair of the Broom Street Capris in navy/polka dot, and I LOVE them.

For reference, I ordered a size 27, and there are only 28, 29, and 30's left. The 27s are snug, but still work- in fact, I really like the fit and want to wear them every day!

I wore these pants to a sneak preview the other day of "The Fault in Our Stars." We read this book in my book club, so my friend Kelly joined me at the preview to see how the movie compared to the book. We had no idea that people would start lining up 3 hours in advance!
The movie started at 7:30, and we arrived at the Southdale Mall at 5 to an already long line...

We grabbed something to eat first, so by the time we made it back to the line, we were a little concerned that we wouldn't even make it into the movie. The theater held 250 people, and we were numbers 240 and 241- just barely made it!

By the way, I thought the movie was pretty well done. Kelly and I were the only people either not in high school or not a parent of a preteen in the theater, but that's just fine!

Anyways, here’s what happened at the Right Fits last week in Fitness:
Monday: Brian Kraft Memorial Day 5k. 1.5 mile warm up, 3.1 miles, then 1 mile cool down, total 5.5 miles. Race recap HERE.

Tuesday: French 5k Endless Summer Trail Run Series. Race Recap HERE.

Wednesday: 1 hour barre class at Balanced Barre

Thursday: 5.5 miles, 1 hour kettlebell class at Balance Fitness. This workout was a killer! We did a version of the Filthy Fifty Crossfit workout: 50 box jumps, 50 pull-ups (jumping), 50 lunges, 50 thrusters, 50 overhead swings, 50 sit-ups, 50 full release pushups, 50 squats, 50 burpees, 50 double-unders (did 200 jump ropes instead). I was sore for seriously 3-4 days, and not just kind of sore, but super sore.

Friday:  1 hour barre class at The Barre- I should never have signed up for this class after such a tough strength workout the night before. Unfortunately, by the time I realized this, it was too late to cancel without losing a class credit…so I went, even though I was only able to do about ½ of the moves.

Saturday: Fast and Furious 8k. Race Recap HERE

Sunday:  Easy recovery run with Matilda, 4 miles

Total- about 20 miles for the week, 1 barre, 1 strength. It was a full week, but lots of fun too!

What’s happening in fitness fashion?
Let's see...in fitness fashion, there’s THIS shirt.
Are you familiar with the term “hangry”- the horrible combination of hungry and angry, i.e. what happens to me when I haven’t eaten in more than two hours? Tell me you know what I'm talking about...You know, where you start to get crabby, and can’t think straight, and you say mean things to people because all you can think of is FOOD!!!!!!!!!! Yes, hangry. If you get hangry like, me, you need this shirt.

I’m sorry for what I said when I was hungry…

With that said, its time for me to have a snack. Have a great night!

Throwing a Fit: My Love Affair with Spades

Guest post by LL in KC

Since Jess is away in NOLA, she asked me to cover Fits for the weekend. It has bee a long time since I wrote for the bog, so I was excited to take her up on the offer. For those of you who are new to the blog, when Jess and I started Fits a few years ago, she was the fitness powerhouse, where I focused more on the fashion handle. So my guest posts will be about fashion...you've been warned.

In the time since I last wrote on the blog, I have begun a very torrid love affair with spades...Kate Spade that is. How can you not love the bright, fun, youthful patterns and colors that are signature of Kate Spade. Yes, I may be a late bloomer, I know. But in my defense, graduate students working for non-profits will NEVER be able to afford KS - they need to find corporate jobs to do that :-)

Recently, I wandered into the Kate Spade store on the Country Club Plaza here in KCMO and found myself in the middle of a sale. Here are a few things that caught my eye that you can also get on the Kate Spade website (along with a few suggested looks to go with them).

Navy & White Stripe Franny Coat with Back Bow (for under $300).

The navy and white stripes, matched with the 3/4 sleeves and back bow make this coat girly, yet professional; trendy yet classic. These are the pairings I had in mind:

This yellow River Island mini:

Or, these JCrew green slim pants:

To dress up or down the skirt or the pants, I really like the following footwear:

The Steve Madden Sincere are currently 33% off at Nordstrom.

Or the Aldo Edulia in coral, currently 25%.

I also have been throwing a fit for polka dot capris this spring. So I was super-pumped to find these Broom Street Capris in navy and white for less than $100.

White polka dots on a blue pant screams spring/summer nautical. I can see these paired with the following:

This coral JCrew Factory tank:

or this one:

And this outfit would not be complete with one of these amazing necklaces (all for prices that fit the bill):

Option #1:

Option #2:

Option #3:

I am a strong believer in invest pieces. However, I think you need to think through how an invest would fit into your current wardrobe. If you cannot come up with at least 5 different looks from your current wardrobe, you should not be purchasing that piece. Kate Spade is definitely an investment and can be challenging to justify the bright, statement pieces at the higher cost. But do not let me discourage you...I haven't ever encountered a Kate Spade piece I did not immediately love. I just force myself to be selective, and keep my husband close as sounding board.

I also believe that a more expensive investment piece always feels better when paired with more affordable accents, like I've provided above.

Weekly Recap: Fitness, Fashion, and Fitness Fashion July 29- August 4

By Jess in Minneapolis

What’s going on in Fitness, Fashion, and Fitness Fashion this week with me (Jess in Minneapolis)?

FITNESS!
This week fitness was all about the Calhoun Beach Running Club! It’s been a long time since I went to the club every day that the club meets, but somehow that is what happened this week. I’m not complaining, as next week, I won’t be able to make it to the club at all, with lots of evening plans that equate to morning running.

Monday: 7 easy miles at the CBRC (Calhoun/Harriet)
Tuesday: 9.5 miles with 6 hill repeats (THIS hill workout)
Wednesday: Kettebells at Balance Fitness (read about that class HERE. Kicked my butt, as usual)
Thursday: 7 miles at the CBRC with six 30-second strides at the end.
30 seconds is such a great amount of time, it flies by! We had a minute rest between each one too. Lovely workout. Calhoun/Harriet again.
Friday:  David K’s Hot Power Fusion at Corepower Yoga in St. Louis Park
Saturday: 17 miles with the CBRC. It was a small crowd because most everyone was racing the Urban Wildland ½ marathon as part of the fall marathon training schedule. Dustin and I are doing the Madison Mini-Marathon in a few weeks instead. I’m not sure why they call it a “mini”- it’s just a regular ol’ half marathon. Since we’re running that race in a few weeks, we decided not to do Urban this year.
Sunday: Ran 4 easy miles with Ms. Matilda
It was a “balanced” week, so to speak! 44 miles of running, 1 strength class and 1 yoga class. No complete rest days though….

FASHION!
This week in fashion, I found a dress for my cousin Joe’s upcoming wedding in Madison, Wisconsin.

This Kate Spade number was a little bit of a splurge for me. I bought it at Melly at the Galleria. I love the preppy nautical color blocking (navy/orange is one my favorite combinations!) Carly from A La Mode Wardrobe Consulting suggested that I pair it with beige/taupe heels and statement earrings. No necklace with the neckline on this dress. I found a great pair of earrings at Francesca’s Collection at Southdale that fit the bill (find them HERE for just $18) that will complete the look. (FYI, Carly is awesome, and she’ll do one-off consultations for particular events via email if you’d like for a small price!)

FITNESS FASHION
This week in fitness fashionwe celebrated my good friend Theresa’s birthday with beers and burgers at the Lyndale Taphouse in Uptown, and Susie and I bought her a pair of the Lululemon Groovy Shorts in black! I think every runner should have a pair of these flattering running shorts. They have a good-sized zippered back pocket for all your GU’s and keys and the wider waistband is comfortable and flattering for all sorts of body types. They are the right fit in fitness fashion! My sister Cresta also just ordered her first pair, and she is loving them so far. Try them out, I bet you'll love them too!

So there's my recap on fitness, fashion, and fitness fashion this week! I hope you all had an awesome weekend.

*Anyone race the Urban Wildland? How did it go?

Throwing a Fit: Yellow Gold

By LL

When I was in high school and college, I never thought that I would wear yellow gold. It reminded me too much of the late 80s and early 90s. It seemed fake and over the top. But here I am now, gravitating toward yellow gold - jewelry, accents, you name it. I particularly think that yellow gold looks great with a summer glow. Not sold yet? Here are a few of the pieces that I am throwing a fit over right now.

{Steve Madden Serenite - $49.95}
Confession: I already have these, but am thinking about replacing them with the ones below!
{P-Stacie in Cognac by Steve Madden - $59.95}

{J.Crew Enamel and Gold Bangles - $49.50}

{Kate Spade Necklace - on sale for $54.50}

{TopShop tank and clutch - sold out!}

There are many different ways to start integrating yellow gold into your wardrobe. But you must remember to edit. Wearing too much gold or the wrong gold pieces paired together can make you look cheap and over-the-top. Try adding a few gold bangles and pairing it with a gold-accented tank. Space the gold out into different parts of your look. Try to avoid yellow gold jewelry with a yellow gold dress - I do not think that I need to explain this one!
