Weekly Recap: Luminous Yoga and Another Successful Capitol Run!

Another week has passed us by and fall has definitely arrived in Minneapolis. I am not quite ready to pull out my fall jacket. I'm going to resist as long as I can! The cooler temps have made running a bit more pleasurable though.

Speaking of running, here is how last week turned out in Fitness:

Monday: 10 miles with 7 hill repeats in the middle. I did this workout with the Calhoun Beach Running Club the day after the City of Lakes Half Marathon. My legs were definitely still tired from the race the day before but I have recently read a lot of articles about the benefit of training on tired legs, so maybe this wasn't such a bad idea after all. I muscled through it, but took Tuesday off from running to recover.

Tuesday: No running. Took a 60-minute outdoor vinyasa class with Luminous Yoga at Lake Calhoun with my friend Vicki. It was lovely.

Wednesday: 5.5 miles with Matilda. It was windy, rainy, and surprisingly cold. I thought Tilda and I would do two lakes, but she didn't seem to be enjoying herself so I cut it short. In the evening, we had our last strength conditioning for runners class at the Calhoun Beach Club. Overall, I really enjoyed this class and I hope that it made me stronger! We'll see at the OBX marathon...

Thursday: 8.5 miles with my friend Meggan. She had mile repeats on her schedule, so we met in the morning to do the warmup together and then did our separate workouts. I had three 10-minute tempo intervals. I feel like I struggle to hit the same paces in the morning that I can easily hit after work, so I'm thinking I need to save the workouts for the evenings and only do easy runs in the early hours. What do you think? Is it easier for you to run hard in the morning or after work?

Friday: 45 minute "mini-barre" class at The Barre in Edina. This was a condensed version of their 60 minute class. I prefer the 60 minute class because you do a lot more arm work. The 45 minute class still does plenty of core/planks, quads and glute work, but I would rather get take the full 60 minutes of "lift, tone, burn!"

Saturday: 18 mile long run with the Calhoun Beach Running Club. Yesterday was the big "capitol run" for our club, where everyone runs from the club to the capitol along the Twin Cities Marathon course.

It is a great opportunity for people to get familiar with the TCM course, including the hills coming up from the river and the rolling hills on Summit Avenue. It was too early in my marathon training to do 22 miles, so we hopped in 4 miles into the route to join for the last 18 miles. It's a really fun morning run. I think we had 45-50 people participating! I have posted about this training run many times in the past (HEREHERE, HERE).

For the past several summer capitol runs, I have had to run a modified route because my marathon is not the same day as the Twin Cities Marathon. The same was true this summer. I still enjoyed 18 miles of the route. I felt great.

We kept our average pace under 9's (I think around 8:50's).  I took two Hammer Gels and there were three organized support stops manned by volunteers from our club that had Powerade, water, and other snacks for us along the way.

Sunday:
Today, Dustin, Matilda, and I slept in and eventually went for an easy 5.5 mile run.

FYI, I found my response from Mr. Little Guy in the elf tree! I'll be posting about it Wednesday in my summer bucket list recap.

It was such a gorgeous day that we decided we needed to get more fresh air. Its weird- as a runner, I often don't "count" the time that I'm running as time outside...I always feel get a little FOMO (<- fear of missing out!) if I'm only outside when running and I want to do more and more on a beautiful day. I know that I'm getting plenty of fresh air when running, but for some reason, it doesn't always feel like it counts.

Anyways, after tooling around on our bikes for awhile, we made a pit stop at the Fulton brewery for a quick bite at the Tollfeson's Family Grill food truck.

Total: 5 days of running, 1 yoga class, 1 barre, 1 easy bike ride, and 1 strength day. I felt like this week was pretty well balanced!

Here's what is new in Fitness Fashion!
My running shoe of choice, the Brooks Ravennas just came out with a new ombre color scheme!

I LOVE it and ordered a pair right away. I won't need them right away, as I am already running in a new pair of Ravennas right now-

...but I do like to have another pair on hand so that I am always prepared. So I purchased this new pair in the awesome ombre hue and they will be next in line after my neon pair hits 500 miles...

Yes, I do diligently track the miles in my shoes. I figure it's the least I can do to prevent injury. In fact, after a longer run last week, my shins were hurting. I checked my mileage and realized my last pair had 570 miles on them. It was definitely time to recycle that pair and move on to my backup pair!

That's all from the Right Fits this week. I hope you had a great week- do anything fun in fitness or try anything new in fitness fashion?

Please sign up HERE for the next webinar with Minneapolis Running. We'll be talking Tips for Gear for First Time Marathoners. Would love to have you there!

Weekly Recap: Esprit de She, Sunrise Yoga, and Some New Athleta Gear

Happy Tuesday friends!

Are you surviving this heat? It's pretty stifling...I decided to skip the hill workout with my run club last night due to the heat, and I just ran easy on my own, with lots of water/walk breaks. Then, a few of the girls and I met up this morning at the early hour of 5:15 am to make up the hill workout. I will share more about that in a "All About Hill Workouts" post, but first let me fill you in on what's happening in Fitness, Fashion, and Fitness Fashion last week!

What's happening in fitness?
Monday: 1 hour barre class at The Barre,, 7 miles with the Calhoun Beach Running Club
Tuesday: 7 miles with the Calhoun Beach Running Club, with three 8 minute tempo intervals
Wednesday: 1 hour barre class at The Barre, 1 hour strength conditioning for runners at the Calhoun Beach Club
Thursday: Sunrise yoga with Luminous Yoga (read all about it HERE), Esprit de She 5k race with 3 mile warmup
Friday: Complete rest!
Saturday: 14 mile long run
Sunday: 4 mile run with Dustin and Matilda, then an awesome time at the Red Barn Pizza Farm <-- stay tuned for a post on that item that I crossed off my summer bucket list!

Summary: 5 days of running, 1 complete rest day, 2 barre classes, 1 strength day

What's happening in fashion?
I wore this maxi dress (find it HERE) to dinner on Saturday at Piccolo. Its kind of a unique take on the standard maxi, with a "T" back style that I liked.

What's happening in fitness fashion?
I posted on Sunday about some new Athleta gear that I am loving- the forerunner tank and the pulse short. Check out that post HERE

That's all I have for now. I hope you are staying cool during this heat wave!

Have you been to a pizza farm?
How are you staying cool during these crazy hot temps??

Fresh New Fit: Sunrise Yoga + Propel Water

Yesterday morning I joined my friend Meggan of The Yoga Garage for a sunrise yoga class at Lake Calhoun. The class was led by Emily of Luminous Yoga. Emily teaches sunset yoga on Lake Calhoun on Tuesdays at 6:30, but this was a special morning class for a video shoot.

A video shoot?
Emily had been contacted by Propel to participate in a promotional photo shoot/video of her class. She posted to facebook looking for volunteers willing to get up early for some free yoga, and I figured, sure why not? Lake Calhoun is less than ½ mile from my house, so I just hopped on my bike with my yoga mat and pedaled on over to Lake Calhoun!

It was so pretty by the lake at that time in the morning.

I also enjoyed watching all the ducks playing around in the flooded areas. I think the ducks are having the BEST SUMMER EVER!

In fact, a family of ducks ventured pretty close to our mats during the class. Maybe they were there to show us how to do duck pose?

Yes, that’s a real pose…

”Yoga Duck Pose or Karandavasna” is an important forearm balance that prepares you for more difficult balances, such as the scorpion or the feathered peacock.

Here’s a picture of duck pose for you:

Anyways, back to the class…At the beginning of the class, we were all given a bottle of Propel to have in the photo shoot. We did have to put away any other water bottles, etc. that we may have brought to the class. I can’t remember the last time I drank Propel. I thought that it would have a bit of an artificial flavor, but it actually tasted pretty decent.

So, why Propel? Apparently Propel has re-entered the market recently, and they are working with a new advertising company. They plan to promote Propel in important fitness markets like Minneapolis! I believe the advertisement will be aired on Fox and NBC in the fall. Keep an eye out for me on your TV!

Here’s what we were told before the class:
Try to wear yoga/athletic clothing without logos/brand names. No need for an emergency blow-out or false lashes, keep it natural (haha!)

The class:
The yoga class was a typical vinyasa style class, with only a few “disruptions” with regards to the photo shoot, such as when the drone with the camera flew over the class to get some overhead shots. It was louder than I expected and gave us quite a breeze as it passed overhead.  There was a couple walking their dogs by when the drone was flying around, and the dogs did not like that drone one bit! They were barking like crazy at that weird flying "animal!" We all chuckled at that one.

Other than the drone, the class was uneventful but good. It was easier than I expected to forget about the handful of photographers taping the class. I was surprised that I wasn’t more distracted or self-conscious- maybe it helped that I hadn’t had any coffee and wasn’t totally awake! But I felt quite present and really enjoyed myself (though boy, oh boy, am I inflexible right now! I think I need more yoga in my life…Iknow that I need more yoga in my life!)

The class did run a little over; it was supposed to go from 6:30 to 7:30, and it was nearly 8 am when it ended. A few students had to leave early, but I didn’t have to rush to work as I had a doctor’s appointment at 9 am; I had plenty of time to spare.

We also all received granola/yogurt cups from Seven Sundays- so good!
The Instructor:
Emily is a great yoga instructor, and I really enjoyed her class. I posted last summer (HERE) about all the awesome free yoga options that we have in Minneapolis- we are really fortunate!

Go check out Emily’s class on Tuesday night at Lake Calhoun, and then the next night you can take Meggan’s sunset yoga on Lake of the Isles.  Maybe she’ll even do duck pose for you! Though on Lake of the Isles, I think she’d need to do GOOSE pose (which, unfortunately,  is not a thing…)

Outdoor yoga is on my summer bucket list, and I plan to make it to more classes this summer with the Yoga Garage and/or Luminous Yoga. I hope to see you there!

Sunrise Yoga plus Proper Water was a lovely way to start the morning.

Namaste!

Fresh New Fit: Luminous Yoga!

By Jess

On Monday, I got in my run in the early morning. I was excited to have my evening open, to enjoy the great weather in a different way than just running. My friend Meggan had invited me to join her at Luminous Yoga's "Savasana at Sunset" on Lake Calhoun.

This hour-long outdoor class is held at the southwest end of Lake Calhoun, on the flat, grassy area where Washburn Avenue meets the lake.

Check out this website for more information: http://www.luminous-yoga.com/

Every Tuesday night in the summer, a donation-based outdoor class is held at sunset, overlooking the lake.

Last night was a special edition, bonus Monday night class!

Rather than the regular teacher, (Emily Shaffer), she had a new teacher leading the class. It was this teacher's first time teaching EVER, but she did great.

Maybe it was the 20 mile race on Saturday, or all the dancing at the wedding Saturday night, but my legs were tight. This class was just what I needed. I could have stayed in pigeon pose all night!

I also want to give a shout-out to my friend Meggan's outdoor yoga class. She teaches Wednesday nights at Lake of the Isles.

Here is her website: http://theyogagarage.com/?tag=minneapolis

Her class was the first outdoor class I ever went to, and in my mind, she started the whole phenomena!

No matter who started it, I LOVE that there are multiple outdoor yoga classes to choose from in the city. These two options are only two of many. Yet the Yoga Garage and Luminous Yoga are the two that I have tried, and I would recommend them both! Pick the one that fits your schedule.

What to bring: Your mat, some water, and some bug spray!

Come check out Meggan at Lake of the Isles this Wednesday at 6:30, or Emily next Tuesday at 6:30 on Calhoun!

Namaste.
