Fits Do Race Reviews: The Wedding Day 5k

This past Saturday was the wedding of our former running club coach Paul and another good running club friend Laura (So many love stories begin in the Calhoun Beach Running Club  - join today! hehe)

I plan to share more pictures from this beautiful wedding in a "Fits on the Road: Sioux Falls" post later this week, but first I want to share with you the awesomeness that was the  Wedding Day 5k!

Paul was the mastermind behind the Memorial Day Pub Run 5k, so it was no surprise that his  Wedding Day 5k was also exceptionally well-executed. He does not mess around with race planning.

The bride-to-be wore a veil paired with the Sweaty Band I gave her at her bachelorette party. So cute! 

Back to the race... It started with online registration for the low, low price of $8.23 (i.e. the wedding date 8/23!) The race fee went towards the cost of the shirts I believe, but who can argue with $8.23 for registration?? Definitely a price that fits the bill!

Course Information from the website:

The Wedding Day 5k features a flat, fast course that runs on the banks of the Big Sioux River. Along the way, participants will see the river, be tempted by an Olive Garden, probably see some geese, and enjoy the fine engineering marvels that are the 41st and 49th street bridges.

The Wedding Day 5k race committee reserves the right to change the course on a whim if deemed necessary due to trail or road construction, getting a bad feeling about this, or other reasons that we make up.

The race started promptly at 7 am right behind the Sioux Falls Clubhouse Hotel & Suites (where most of the wedding guests were staying for the wedding). It was extremely convenient to just wake up and walk out the back door of the hotel to the start line. The hotel was located right by the Big Sioux River trail.

Packet Pickup:

Packet pickup was held on Friday in the late afternoon and again later that night (after the rehearsal dinner of course). The gear bags included pens, pads of paper, course maps, and our official race t-shirts. Packet up was extremely easy- no line!

Race morning:

We woke up to overcast skies but temperatures in the 80's with high humidity. 

Like I mentioned in my weekly recap earlier this week, we were up kind of late on Friday and had a lot of pizza and beer at "A Taste of the Big Apple." It was hard to get up and get moving for the race, but I did get in a very short warmup.

Then, promptly at 7 am, we were off!

There was someone calling out mile splits at mile 1 (i.e. the groom's mom!) and then there was someone calling out your time at the finish line.

Even better, we received "official" results emails within an hour of finishing. And we could tweet or post our results to Facebook with a quick click of a button!

As you can see, I didn't run a PR at the Wedding Day 5k (my PR is 22:46). I wouldn't recommend lots of pizza and beer the night before a 5k. But let's be honest, the Wedding Day 5k wasn't about racing- it was about starting off this special day with running. Running was what brought Laura and Paul together, so it was only appropriate that all of their running friends celebrated by running on their wedding day. Nearly 50 people finished the 5k that morning, with more than that doing a shorter walking option. So fun!

Even though I ran slow (for me), Dustin and I still won a trophy for fastest combined time for a married couple. #proud

Great job to the race directors and planning committee. By far, the best Wedding Day 5k that I have ever done!

FIts Do Race Reviews: Brian Kraft Memorial Day 5k

On Memorial Day, Dustin and I participated in the 17th annual Brian Kraft Memorial Day 5k

This is a flat and fast 5k run around Lake Nokomis in South Minneapolis. It was held on Memorial Day Monday at 8:30 am.

Who is Brian Kraft?
From the website:
"Brian Kraft was an enthusiastic and talented runner from Bemidji, Minnesota. His running career was cut short at the age of 19 with the discovery of Ewing's sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer, in his back. Brian lived with cancer for 15 years, undergoing chemotherapy, a bone marrow transplant, and countless surgical procedures.

Throughout the years, Brian continued to run. He ran the lakes and parkways and raced with the local running crowd. In spite of all that life threw his way, he kept a positive attitude. Brian attributed his strength in his fight against cancer to his love of running and to the work of his long-time friend, Dr. Arny Leonard.

Dr. Arnold S. Leonard and his colleagues at the University of Minnesota and the National Cancer Institute have made significant advances in cancer research in the last five years. They are working on a series of projects that reduces cancers of all kinds by boosting the central immune system by genetic engineering. This exciting new field of cancer therapy has great promise."

This 5k is part of the USATF team circuit, of which the Calhoun Beach Running Club is now a part of. At each race on the running schedule circuit, we have to have 5 men and 5 women to officially "score" at the race.

Even though I had participated in the Memorial Day Pub Run the day before, I still did the 5k so that we had a full women's team...basically, I was just a warm body to make our team legit!

This 5k is extremely competitive. It attracts a very fast crowd, with the winning time of 14:46! So impressive.

I didn't run very well, but Dustin had a PR! He felt great (even though he also participated in the Memorial Day Pub Run the day before...) I was very proud of him, and excited that he had such a great race!

Not every local 5k is chip-timed, but this one definitely is. As advertised, it is flat and fast.

There isn't a lot of swag at this race, but you do get a cozy cotton t-shirt....(yes, this one is a little wrinkly.) It's a serious 5k, but still lots of fun.

For a 5k, I give this race a 10/10. It's a great way to start out the holiday, and its cool to be around such fast runners.

Hopefully I'll be back next year!

Friday Fav Fit: Electric Run (Preview)

Tonight is the Electric Run in KC, well actually in Bonner Springs, KS, but close enough to be called the KC Electric Run.

My husband and I are running the race with some of our friends on a team and have been carefully planning our attire. Here is a peek at what I will be wearing:

Yes, that is an LED wig, along with glow in the dark shades and flashing LED bracelets. Still, with all this flashy gear, it will be hard to stand out in a crowd like this:

It should be a fun race. There are no time chips so everyone is encouraged to stop and enjoy the stages. This is the first race I've paid to do without an official timing system, but it should make it more fun to do as a group. However, it is supposed to rain here in KC all weekend, so I might still be racing just to get through it and out of the rain.

I've heard mixed reviews about the race, so I will let you know how it goes and whether it is worth it to sign up in your town. But until I know otherwise, this is today's Fav Fit.

Fits Do Race Reviews: The Athleta Esprit de She 5k

The Athleta Esprit de She 5k debuted last Thursday night at 50th/France in Edina. It was a very fun and exciting running event that just happened to correspond with "Ladies Night Out" at one of my favorite shopping destinations!

The 50th/France shopping area has several great boutiques and stores- Anthropologie, Athleta, Hot Mama, Prana, Fringe, Il Vostro Boutique, Title Nine, and so much more!

For Ladies Night Out, there were so many business offering discounts for participants in the race (full list below) Each runner received two coupons for glasses of bubbly after the race! How fun is that?

Packet Pickup: Packet Pickup was held at slightly random times at the Athleta store at 50th/France. It was on Tuesday from 5-7 pm, Wednesday from 10-12 am, and then Thursday before the race started.   I picked up my packet on Tuesday after work at the Athleta store, which just happened to be having their semi-annual sale…so of course I also picked up a new bikini as well…I couldn’t resist!

Apparently, a few of my older swimsuits are now a little saggy in the bottom, so I was sure to buy one that fits pretty snug in the bum. Athleta's suits a made for someone with a more athletic build- I felt like I could do some serious paddleboard yoga in this one!

Back to the race...
I liked that I could also pick up packets for my friends, without having their driver’s licenses, etc. which was helpful. Unfortunately, though, they ran out of size small singlets, and wouldn’t let my friend Meggan switch to a medium, so she still had to pick hers up at the race. And then at the race, they ran out completely! They did say that they will be shipping her a singlet once they get more in stock, so hopefully that little snafu will be remedied, especially since the singlets are really cute.They are a bright yellow color and a unique style- not just your standard race t-shirt. 

These singlets are actually fun! I give the race swag a 10/10! The goodie bag also offered coupons for $25 off at Prana (a yoga/athletic apparel store) and a free appetizer at the Edina Grill. The bag itself was a nice reusable bag, and it also included a simple workout watch/timer. Sweet!

Race Start: The start time for the race was 6:30 pm. Since the race location was only about a mile from my house, it was easy for my girlfriends and me to run to the start as a warmup. 

We decided to take quite a round-about way, and got in 4.5 miles before the race as a warmup. We did get some crusty looks from the other runners when we arrived at the start line already sweating. I would have expected a little more girl power/female commaderie, like I found at the Women Run the Cities 10 miler a few years ago. That was the only other women-only race I have done, and I remember really loving the energy there. Maybe it was because of the shorter distance of this particular race, but it didn't seem to have the same energy at this event...Don't get me wrong, I'm all about wearing matching outfits for a run (fitness fashion is the name of the game!) but I'm also not afraid to sweat! So maybe others just thought it was odd for us to arrive already sweaty. 

Overall, this wasn't the most competitive 5k out there, though the winner did run a 16:25 (holy moly!).  Yet even with a few faster runners, the three of us "average" runners were pretty comfortable moving up close to the start line, though we didn't quite put our toe on the line, so to speak.

Parking: If you weren't able to jog to the start line, there did appear to be plenty of free parking at the ramps at 50th/France. I would still suggest parking in the Linden Hills or Morningside neighborhoods and jogging to the start so you wouldn't have to worry about getting stuck in a ramp after the race.

Course: The race started and finished at West 51^st Street and Halifax Avenue South right near the 50^thand France business neighborhood. There were a few rolling hills. It was an out and back course, which actually made it go a little faster, since you knew what you were in for, and you knew where the finish line would be, as the start/finish were at the same place. There was limited crowd support- just a few families out in front of their houses cheering, but that's to be expected for a small 5k. The "back" part of the out-and-back course did get a little crowded at one section, when those of us who were running collided into the large groups of walkers going the other way. We ended up squished a bit up on the sidewalk, as the walkers didn't really move to the right to make way.

Post-Race Party: Similar to the Torchlight 5k from last week (read about that race HERE) this 5k was all about the post-race “rendezvous”! There was the aforementioned two glasses of bubbly at the finish and all the shopping and discounts for Ladies Night Out. There was also a photo booth available for funny pictures with your girlfriends. There was Greek yogurt, Starbucks iced coffee, cold towels, water, Gatorade, banans, etc. It was an impressive set up!

I actually finished over a minute faster than last week's Torchlight 5k. The cooler temperatures definitely helped as well as the less crowded start line. It was a nice reminder that a 5k can serve as a fun tempo run as a change of scenery. I ended up with 7.5 miles total for the day, with 3.1 miles at tempo pace, which was almost exactly the workout on my schedule.

Overall Rating: I think I would give this 5k a rating of 8/10. The issues they had weren't that big of a deal, especially considering it was the first year of this race. They'll figure out those little quirks for next year, I'm sure. I'm guessing they had a lot more late registrants, which is why they ran out of singlets. I'm not sure what caused the fifteen minute delay at the start, but again, it didn't ruin the event. I loved the SWAG.

I thought the course and the finish area were very well-organized. Packet pickup was easy, even though the times were a little odd. I love a chip-timed 5k- there are plenty of 5k fun runs out there, so it's nice to do one with an official time. There was quite an impressive list of sponsors as well. I could tell a lot of effort went into planning this event, and I hope to see it continue on in the future. I definitely recommend this one to my running girlfriends!

Fits Do Race Previews: Electric Run KCMO

Back in the day, I really enjoyed 5k races. I would sign up for every fun race that came to town. Recently, I've stuck to half marathons instead. However, when I learned from a co-worker that the Electric Run is coming to KCMO, I got excited and immediately went to my computer to register. But registration doesn't start until 9:05 a.m. today! First 50 registrants get LED shades!

Here is a little information about the Electric Run.

A 5k run/walk that is as much show as it is run.

Electric Run™ is a 5k run, a show, participation art, and celebration of life. Incredibly talented artists and lighting technicians with experience creating beautiful art and light at Coachella, Dreamworks Animations, Disney, and some of Vegas’ hottest shows have come together to create  a world that will fill you with wonder.

Participation Art / What to wear
The Electric Run is a show; the course is the set and the participants are the cast! Come let your light shine and your creative juices flow. Add your own creative spark by dressing up in other-worldy costumes that glow, shine, blink, and dazzle. Show us all what you’ve got!

Lighting elements

Each course will have 5-10 distinct lighting experiences which will include different artistic elements and different moods. Some will be very energetic others will be more etherial. Our in-house DJs will be working with our Art and Lighting Directors to create custom mixes that work with the visual mood in each world.

The race will be in Kansas City, MO on August 1st. It should be a fun, unique experience. I'm excited to participate and so will be my husband...he just doesn't know he is running it yet!
