Fits Do Race Reviews: The Electric Run KC

By LL in KC

Last Friday, my husband and I ran the Electric Run KC. It was the first time I had done a night race and I was super pumped about my gear (particularly my LED green afro)! However, I wondered how the actual race would be since I had heard mixed reviews about it from friends who had run the race in other cities. But Vanessa Hudgens had raved about it, so it had to be good right?

The Start
The race officially started at 9:00 p.m. The late start gave our group time to meet up and grab dinner (and a beer or two) before the race. Prior to the race, we were told that we should arrive around 7:00 p.m. to find adequate parking, etc. We got there at 8:15 p.m. and had no problems. Would have been boring to hang around for 2 hours!

At the start of the race, they were giving out free cans of Rockstar. Wasn't the biggest fan of the flavor, but still a nice idea.

Like I said, I was pretty excited about the gear I had chosen for the race. I had LED spike bracelets, glow-in-the-dark sunglasses, a glow afro and my brightest running clothes. My husband was smart and opted for neon sweatbands. I'm telling you, with the humidity the night of the race, I was dying under my wig!

Besides the Rockstar at the beginning, the race also gave pretty good swag - a nice performance material tee, an LED bracelet, a glow-in-the-dark bib and glow sunglasses (none of ours worked well, though, so we wore our glow-in-the-dark sunglasses, which looked awesome in the blacklights along the course but made it VERY difficult to see).

{The starting chute}

The starting line was pretty chaotic. The race wasn't timed, but they still had to start us in waves to thin out the crowds. We were there early and still very far from the start. But, they kept us entertained with a DJ (all techno music, so beware if it isn't your thing) and threw lots of glow toys into the crowd. It was really hot and muggy in the chute and we probably did not start until almost 10:00 p.m. - and there were still masses of people behind us.

The Course
The course was fun, filled with lots of light shows and techno music. However, these areas got very congested. It was difficult to run, but you really wouldn't want to run through these, so if you are against stopping for photos during a 5k, this isn't your race. Here are some of the cool and electric sights along the way:

{Hitting my stride down rainbow road}

{Stopping for a photo in the bubbly, glow colon-esque tunnel}

{Refreshments along the route - water and more Rockstar}

All in all a fun run. It is definitely an untraditional race that draws a lot of non-runners, but definitely worth trying out at least once.

The End
The end consisted of over-priced light beer (not necessarily a fault of the race, rather the venue...Cricket Wireless Amphitheater), loud techno music and a massive dance party. Not necessarily this group's finale of choice, but we hung around for awhile and took in the sights of all the craziness that is the Electric Run. Out of 5 stars - this would be a 3.

Friday Fav Fit: Electric Run (Preview)

By LL in KC

Tonight is the Electric Run in KC, well actually in Bonner Springs, KS, but close enough to be called the KC Electric Run.

My husband and I are running the race with some of our friends on a team and have been carefully planning our attire. Here is a peek at what I will be wearing:

Yes, that is an LED wig, along with glow in the dark shades and flashing LED bracelets. Still, with all this flashy gear, it will be hard to stand out in a crowd like this:

It should be a fun race. There are no time chips so everyone is encouraged to stop and enjoy the stages. This is the first race I've paid to do without an official timing system, but it should make it more fun to do as a group. However, it is supposed to rain here in KC all weekend, so I might still be racing just to get through it and out of the rain.

I've heard mixed reviews about the race, so I will let you know how it goes and whether it is worth it to sign up in your town. But until I know otherwise, this is today's Fav Fit.

Fits Do Race Previews: Electric Run KCMO

By LL in KCMO

Back in the day, I really enjoyed 5k races. I would sign up for every fun race that came to town. Recently, I've stuck to half marathons instead. However, when I learned from a co-worker that the Electric Run is coming to KCMO, I got excited and immediately went to my computer to register. But registration doesn't start until 9:05 a.m. today! First 50 registrants get LED shades!

Here is a little information about the Electric Run.

A 5k run/walk that is as much show as it is run.
Electric Run™ is a 5k run, a show, participation art, and celebration of life. Incredibly talented artists and lighting technicians with experience creating beautiful art and light at Coachella, Dreamworks Animations, Disney, and some of Vegas’ hottest shows have come together to create  a world that will fill you with wonder.
Participation Art / What to wear
The Electric Run is a show; the course is the set and the participants are the cast! Come let your light shine and your creative juices flow. Add your own creative spark by dressing up in other-worldy costumes that glow, shine, blink, and dazzle. Show us all what you’ve got!
Lighting elements
Each course will have 5-10 distinct lighting experiences which will include different artistic elements and different moods. Some will be very energetic others will be more etherial. Our in-house DJs will be working with our Art and Lighting Directors to create custom mixes that work with the visual mood in each world.

The race will be in Kansas City, MO on August 1st. It should be a fun, unique experience. I'm excited to participate and so will be my husband...he just doesn't know he is running it yet!
