Fits Do Halloween: What Does the Fox Say?

Here it is my friend, the Halloween post you've been waiting for!

Okay, okay, maybe you weren't waiting with bated breath for these pictures....or maybe you are like me, and really love to see how creative people can get with their costumes. If so, I think you will enjoy all these Halloween pictures!

I mean, how great is this Mr. Miyagi and Daniel-son?

I loved the creativity from the Marlboro Man and the girl from Morton's Salt!

AC Slater from Saved by the Bell made an appearance at the party.

Dustin made some Halloween themed jello shots- brains and the scream face!

We only hung out at our house for a little while before heading to Icehouse on Nicollet for their costume party. It was there that I ran into Khal Drogo (the husband of Daenerys Targaryen on Game of Thrones, which was my costume). But my date for the night was of course my dragon.

We saw so many great costumes at Icehouse. Check out these: a few Capitol ladies from the Hunger Games, a jellyfish, Miley and Robin Thicke, and some cotton candy!

There were so many other good ones, but I didn't get a chance to take pictures of them all. Icehouse put on a good party, with good music, good drinks, and good times.

Happy Halloween! Are you wearing orange and black today? Think that the color combo can be a bit extreme? Here is a quick peek at a few ways that you can wear orange and black in celebration of the holiday.

{Try an orange dress (or black dress) and bring in the contrast through the accessories}

{Go for all over orange, white and black throughout your entire ensemble}

{Add in textures to break up the starkness of orange and black - like a lace skirt or polka dot blouse}

{Take a nod from Kendi and go for a soft autumnal look, using accessories to mute the color contrast}

{Embrace the colored pants movement and add a black blazer to your favorite orange pants}

It is fun to embrace holidays, so don't shy away from wearing orange and black today. For a lot of us, not all shades of orange are the right fit. Try out a few different shades or just bring in the orange through accessories, like scarves, necklaces or handbags. Have a merry Hallow's Eve!!

Fits Do Halloween: Go for the Gold!

Like LL, I love the creativity and imagination that is prominently displayed on Halloween.  I'm always amazed at what some people come up with, and this year was definitely not a disappointment.

I had planned the D-man and my costumes a few weeks ago, and ours was a 2012 Olympic theme. It seemed timely- the Olympics only happen once every four years, right? So, I went as the gymnast Jordyn Weiber (complete with a boot for her stress fracture). 

....and Dusters was bronze medal-winning rower "Henrik Rummel." Google Henrik, and you'll understand the CENSORED sign!.

LL had reminded us in her post here that we should be careful not to select costumes that no one would understand, or costumes that are inappropriate...

She said :
Let your costume stand alone and tell a positive story. If your costume needs an explanation, it might not be that good. 

Uh-oh! The D-man's costume needed an explanation for most, and it was slightly offensive. Yes, it may have been a failed fit, but it was all in good fun.

With our costumes taken care of, I was excited to see what my friends came up with, and last night was the "great unveil." A run cub friend hosted a wonderful party in her new home. Along with great decorations and tasty food, her party attendees came up with an eclectic mix of creative costumes.

Apparently a binder of women was a popular idea!

I love costumes that are very "current." Presidential candidate Mitt Romney's comment about his "binder full of women" happened just last week, and these creative cats were able to put together funny and timely costumes in a very short time...I love it!

Political costumes are always good for a laugh, but TV and movie characters are also a good choice! There were a few "Always Sunny in Philadelphia" costumes at the party. I don't watch the show, but if you do, you'll probably recognize these guys:

Who hasn't seen and loved the movie "Elf" with Will Ferrell? These handmade costumes looked pretty authentic to me. Elf even carried his etch-a-sketch and marshmallow bag.

Although I was surprised that there were no Ryan Lochte's, there was a McKayla Maroney, and she was definitely NOT impressed by Henrik's bronze medal....

Halloween is a fun holiday - not only because of the excuse to eat lots of candy, but for the opportunity to dress up and pretend to be someone else. I've always enjoyed conceptualizing a great costume and finding a way to do it on a budget. I believe that what you come up with says a lot about your creativity and a bit more about your fantasies. Children run around dressed up as their favorite cartoon characters or in the uniforms of professionals they want to be when they grow up. Young adults run around dressed as the type of people they wish they were or in the uniforms of professionals they wish they could be when they grow up ;-)

Unfortunately, young adult and adult costume choices have become polarized - slutty for women, funny for men. Case in point - at a Halloween party in college, the girls were dressed as Playboy Bunnies, the men were dressed as a Fooseball Table (pretty creative until they wanted to break apart and mingle).

This situation means that we all need to be careful about Halloween costumes as we get older and make sure that it is the right fit. It can say a lot about you, unfortunately.

1. Be cautious about what you wear to work Halloween parties or other mixed crowd events (i.e., public bar parties). It can leave a bad taste in your co-workers' and supervisors' mouths.

2. Don't get too wrapped up in your character and do things that you wouldn't do when dressed in your regular clothes. You are only pretending to be your fantasy character, but it is reality, not fantasy. It will come back and haunt you.

3. Let your costume stand alone and tell a positive story. If your costume needs an explanation, it might not be that good. Plus, as in the example above, if your costume depends on another person (or persons) it is hard to go anywhere alone.

Featured Fit: An Artistic Evening

It's that time of year again- Halloween! And, who doesn't love an excuse to wear a costume? 

What did you wear- anything creative? See anything good while you were out?

When my sister decided to come up to run the Monster Dash 1/2 marathon, she mentioned that she had a Frida Kahlo costume she would bring.

We tried to come up with other recognizable artists, and decided the D-man should be Vincent Van Gogh...

And I would be a paintbrush!

We constructed the "brush" part of the costume with a hula skirt and wire. Aluminum foil was the base of the brush. A black turtleneck, tights, and a running skirt were the "handle".

A few splats of paint were the finishing touches.

However, no one knew what I was supposed to be. Some common guesses were that I was a troll, Carrot Top, Lady Gaga, and a Fraggle from Fraggle Rock.

So, it might have been a bit of a "failed fit" in terms of recognition, but that's what Halloween is all about, right?
